The Home I Made: Hi Substack!
Welcome to my new newsletter – a mix of interiors, life and career
And hello reader (is there anybody out there?). I’m Lindsay and I’m the name behind The Home I Made.
I’ve been quietly admiring fellow Substackers on here for a while and have now decided to take the plunge and start my own space to write. So welcome.
A bit about me to start: I’m an editor and journalist and have spent the last decade or so working for homes and interiors magazines, including as editor of national interiors magazine, Kitchens Bedrooms & Bathrooms.
I always wanted to work for a magazine – ever since I watched Kate Hudson parade glamorously around New York as Andie Anderson to nail her feature in How To Lose A Guy In Ten Days way back when (true story). I thought: ‘that’s what I want to do’ and so I did. Minus most of the glamour and, sadly, not in New York (I live in Milton Keynes, so the only thing those two places have in common is probably the grid system).
So while I wouldn’t say I’m new to putting ‘pen to paper’, I am new to creating a newsletter like this one that’s just for me (and you, of course) so I’m excited to get going.
So what is it all about?
You see, all of these years working in interiors publishing have given me many opportunities to nosy into other people’s homes (a great perk), get lots of ideas on ways to decorate, renovate and style rooms, see stunning designs and meet the clever folk behind iconic products, but, well, that’s not really my real life. Yep, spoiler.
In the ten plus years that I have been writing about high-end interiors, I rented various properties and couldn’t do much to them (cue frustration and serious interiors envy). And even if I could, my budget didn’t quite stretch to the things I’d spend my days looking at and putting on pages or in online articles. Don’t get me wrong, I love interiors and have a mental shopping list as long as my arm and dream of one day creating a space worthy of those glossy magazine pages, but the process is slow and life gets in the way, and, hey, that’s ok.
It was only last year, on this very day in 2022, that I was finally able to call myself a fully fledged (and fully mortgage-bound) homeowner and actually be able to create my home the way I’d like it. And so it’s become The Home I Made.
While this Substack won’t just be about my home, I am keen to explore a different side to interiors writing to what I am used to in my day job – a side of it that’s personal to me and to my pocket – and share some ideas and what I love. I’ll also write about my career, things I’ve learned or come across, what I’m up to and some musings on life along the way. A mix of interiors, life and career from a homes and interiors editor and journo…or so my blurb says.
I’m also keen to hear from you about the home you’ve made (or are making, or planning to make one day) because I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy being nosy about other people’s homes too, so I look forward to being part of this Substack community. I hope you enjoy what’s to come and thanks in advance for being here for the ride.

Lindsay
